Music & Movement for Seniors
Entertaining and engaging seniors and those living with dementia.
By using Silent Disco Technology music becomes an activity rather than a passive background noise. People become engaged and interact with instructions given via the headphones.
Golden Groove Silent Disco can provide the following benefits:-
There is alot of research which recommends the use of music for those living with Dementia, Music floods the brain and is one of the last things to go. We use music from their past to bring them back to themselves.
Memory recall for dementia patients
Listening to music from their past can sometimes lift people out of the haze of confusion and reactivate memories, this may only be for a short while but it can be very calming. Our music playlists have been chosen specifically to activate memories in this way.
Music can trigger the release of dopamine in the brain, this is associated with pleasure, motivation and reward. Listening to music also reduces the stress hormone cortisol, which makes the person feel more relaxed and less stressed. Music is a holistic approach which can work in so many positive ways rather than targeting one problem. It can bring people together and bring someone back to themself.
If you don't USE it you LOSE it
The gentle exercise routines have been developed with, and approved by, exercise physiologists to ensure movements are focussed on strengthening, flexibility, spacial awareness, cognitive stimulation, cardio, endurance and co ordination.
Matched with suitable music that they are familiar with we encourage the seniors to move their body with fun, stimulating routines that improve their overall health and wellbeing. It works the facial muscles by creating the biggest smiles.
Benefits of using Silent Disco Technology
Headphones are beneficial on many levels. It cuts out distracting noise from around them and they can hear the instructors voice along with the music directly into their ears. This creates a very immersive experience where participants are fully engaged and are better able to focus on instructions. As everyone is wearing the headphones they sing along like no one can hear them and it becomes a very magical musical activity. People start moving to the music in a way they wouldn't if the music was played in the background. Its very stimulating and heightens their awareness.
Positive Changes in Behaviour
Dancing and moving to the music during our program has been shown to reduce agitation in participants. Those living with dementia can become frustrated and display difficult behaviours. An additional benefit to the sessions is that participants can become easier for facility staff to manage after the class. Many seniors will start to discuss things that they associated with a song they listened to during the session and this can open up conversations which otherwise wouldn't take place. They often leave smiling and singing.
Participants hear the same music and this creates a connection with everyone moving and singing together. we encourage the staff, family and friends to join in. We have children from a local nursery join us at a class and from 5 to 95 they sing and dance together. Intergenerational interaction is tricky to say but magical to watch. It is a BEAUTIFUL EXPERIENCE.
